TACOS by Alex Stupak and Jordana Rothman

I was upset the other day because I really wanted to just scan through this book, glean some awesome recipes, dog-ear others as the ephemeral ‘One Day I Must Try…’.

Yeah.

That didn’t happen.

This book is too FUNNY to scan through. I kept getting caught up in the stories he tells in the asides, the headers, the in-between places.

SERIOUSLY funny.

Take this, for example, on page 121: “Maybe junk food is a universal golden calf and I just need to get right with the Lord.”

I laughed again and again reading this – including the reference to using his ‘mother-in-law’s “I heart Jesus” pencils’ to stake out a pig-roasting pit.

I did, in the end, pick out, like 35 recipes I need to now try – and BEST STILL – I get to explore a new kind of supermarket! I love exploring markets. This book uses all sorts of cool ingredients found in Latino markets, like Pincillo and a million kinds of peppers I’d not heard of before. Luckily, there are pages and pages of descriptors for all these items – introducing them to newbies like me. Also, in each recipe options are given. If you don’t want to use Lard, you can substitute blah-blah-blah. If you can’t find X you can use Y. That sort of thing.

Also, this cookbook explains it’s pairings – which salsas work best with which tacos and which tortillas.

Seriously – check this cookbook out.
